Amodeo’s Gas Station

Subject: Amodeo’s Gas Station

This circa 1900 photo shows the steep terrain behind where Amodeo Brothers’ service station and the Raccoon Saloon stand today on Route 9W. At the bottom of this drop rests a pond known as the “sucker hole” because of the sucker fish that populated it. A tragic 1886 New York Times article, titled, Fell Over a Precipice, reports that “’Buffalo Frank’ fell to the bottom of the “sucker hole” after losing his footing at the rear of the McMullen House.”
